GEARS INITIATIVE Zambia has described as pure political hooliganism the destruction and harassment of staff at Choma Debonaires by UPND cadres on allegations of the outlet’s failure to display the presidential portrait.
Yesterday, some unruly UPND cadres harassed and attacked the Choma Debonaires outlet which is operated under franchise by PF member of the central committee Kebby Mbewe for not allegedly not displaying President Hichilema’s portrait.
GEARS Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi says the act of violence is unfortunate, barbaric and a display of lawlessness.
Mr Chipenzi says there is no law that requires businesses and offices to display a presidential portrait.
He says it’s a mere practice and not a legal requirement, adding that no law has been enacted to criminalise failure to display the presidential portrait in public,business and government places.
Mr. Chipenzi states that the incident in Choma was clearly more of political than legal, stressing that the cadres merely used the presidential portrait issue to get at Mr Mbewe whose conduct before,during and after the elections could have been injurious to them.
