Chingwere accident death toll rises to 10

The death toll from the Chingwere, Great North Road turnoff fatal road traffic accident has risen to 10, after one of the victims who were admitted to the University Teaching Hospital died today.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has identified the deceased as Catherin Phiri aged 21 of Chingwere who is the mother to one of the victims, a one month old baby who died on the spot.

And Mr. Hamoonga adds that so far, 7 victims have been identified.

He says the accident claimed 8 lives on the spot who were unidentified, and that as at today, 5 of the deceased have been identified as one month old NATHAN PHIRI , TREACER NGOMA aged 39, GABRIEL PHIRI aged 44 and MABVUTO PHIRI aged 38 all of Ngwerere while MAMBO MULAKO aged 53 was from Lusaka West.

Mr Hamoonga says the other four deceased passengers remain unidentified in the UTH mortuary.

He says the two passengers who sustained serious injuries have been identified as CATHERINE PHIRI aged 21 of Ngwerere who sustained fractured legs and LOTIA LUNGU whose age is not known but also of Ngwerere and sustained fractured legs.

And Mr. Hamoonga has disclosed that the driver of the Howo truck who was on run has been apprehended by his employer and handed over to the Police and iscurrently detained at Kabangwe Police post.

He has identified him as Mwenda Tembo aged 36 years of Matero Township.
