HRC notes the need for older persons to be celebrated

HRC Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya

The Human Rights Commission has called for the celebration of the lives of older persons as the international community celebrates International Day of the Older Persons today, 1st October,2019.

Commission Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says older persons are a family, societal and national heritage and must be celebrated for the gift of their long lives.

Mr Muleya says it is therefore everyone’s moral obligation to share time and other forms of resources such as food as well as spiritual and moral support with the older persons on this important global commemoration.

He states that this year’s international Theme of “The Journey to Age Equality” signifies the need to promote and protect an intergenerational society that does not discriminate based on one’s age.

Mr Muleya adds that older members of society are critical to sustainable family, societal and national stability and development as they are an important bridge between different generations and play a role of passing on knowledge and wisdom to young generations based on their cumulative experiences.
