Zesco defers importation of power from South Africa

ZESCO Limited says the importation of 300 Megawatts of power from South Africa at a cost of US$22 million per month will not commence on 1st October,2019 as earlier announced.

And ZESCO says it is in the process of revising upwards the current eight hours of load shedding.

Speaking when members of the parliamentary committee on energy, water development and tourism conducted a familiarization tour of Kariba North Bank power station in Siavonga, ZESCO acting Managing Director Webster Musonda could not state when the utility will begin importing power from Eskom of South Africa.

Mr Musonda says certain requirements by the supplier need to be in place before the importation of power can commence.

And Mr Musonda says the current eight hours of load shedding has not worked to ZESCO’s expectations due to lack of compliance by some consumers.

He says the lack of adherence by consumers has led to increased demand for power which if left unchecked will result in the depletion of water in Lake Kariba and the complete shutdown of Kariba North Bank power station.
