Sikale Wood Manufacturers workers down tools, demand increased salaries

Workers at Sikale Wood Manufacturers Limited in Lusaka have downed tools demanding increased salaries.

Q-news crew that rushed to the company’s premises in the industrial area found workers outside demanding for better working conditions.

They have complained that they have worked for several years without signing any contracts and that what they are paid does not match the work they do.

They say foreigners are given preference when it comes to being given contracts at the expense of local workers.

And Company Human Resources Manager Chongo Kamwinshi says the company is already looking into the issue of salary increment for the workers.

She has expressed disappointment with the manner the workers decided to air their grievances when there is an established channel of doing so.

Meanwhile efforts by Labour officers to get a representative of the workers to go and air their grievances at the labour office failed as the workers were not interested saying they have been to the labour office several times and nothing has been done to address their plight.
