Importation of power a waste of public resources – Sinkamba

Opposition Green Party president Peter Sinkamba says government’s decision to start importing 300 megawatts of electricity from South Africa at a cost of US$13.5 million to mitigate the electricity power deficit is a waste of public resources.

Mr. Sinkamba says government missed an opportunity when it failed to accept the offer by Mozambique to export power 500 megawatts to Zambia and Zimbabwe in exchange for further reduced power generation at Kariba dam.

Mr. Sinkamba says the move was meant to cut down on water released at Kariba dam whose discharge is worsening overflow at Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique.

He has told QTV News in a telephone interview that if Zambia had accepted the offer, it could have saved more water from Lake Kariba.

In May this year, Mozambique’s Hydro Electrica de Cahorra Bassa offered Zimbabwe and Zambia power imports in exchange for further reduced power generation by the two countries at their Kariba Dam hydro plants.
