4 die after being hit by vehicle in Nyimba

Four people died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle in Nyimba district in eastern province.

Provincial deputy Police Commissioner, Geoffrey Kunda says the incident happened on Saturday.

Addressing a media briefing in Chipata today, Mr Kunda says the vehicle careered off the road due to over speeding and hit the four people killing them on the spot.

And four people died in separate road traffic accidents in Katete and Chipata districts during the Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people on Saturday.

Mr Kunda says two people died while 18 others were hospitalized following an accident involving a Toyota Dyna registration ARB 3388.

He says the vehicle overturned due to over speeding and identified the deceased as Dorcas Lungu 32 of Nadalistika compound and Peter Sakala 38, of Magazine compound in Chipata.

He named the driver as Timothy Ngoma 29, of Mchini compound, also in Chipata district.

Mr Kunda says one person died near Fort Jameson hotel in Chipata after being run over by a vehicle which was coming from the ceremony in Katete.
