Street Vending remains illegal- Banda

Minister of Tourism and Arts Charles Banda

Local government Minister Charles Banda says street vending remains illegal.

Speaking at a media briefing, Dr. Banda has since directed local authorities in the country to take full charge of controlling street vendors.

He has however, warned Council Police against confiscating goods from street vendors as they carry out their operations to curb the vice.

Dr. Banda says the confiscation of goods form the vendors is an illegal act.

And Dr. Banda has disclosed that government has come up with a draft urban policy to help municipalities to plan and manage urban growth and deliver cost effective public services and infrastructure.

And the Minister says Government is scouting for about K30 million to complete the construction of the Simon Mwewa Market along Lumumba road in Lusaka.

Dr Banda government is owing the subcontractors about K15 million and a further K15 million is owed to the main contractor who is the Zambia National Service (ZNS).

Dr. Banda says the lack of funds is one of the major challenges the ministry is facing with regards the completion of the market which has reached about 88 percent complete and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
