Chomba moots performance appraisals for construction companies

Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary, Bishop Dr. Eddy Chomba says his ministry will start conducting performance appraisals for construction companies working on various projects under his ministry.

Bishop Chomba who has expressed disappointment at the slow pace the contractor engaged to put up water pipes in Chongwe district is working feels most contractors are not taking work seriously.

Speaking when he conducted an on the spot check on works on the construction of the 27 kilometers long water pipeline from Margaret Mwachiyeya water supply transmission to Chongwe, Bishop Chomba says government is committed to ensuring that the people of Chongwe are provided with clean, safe and adequate water, but that the contractor engaged is delaying progress in this regard.

He has questioned what is causing the delay in the execution of the project when the contractor Zambezi Drilling Company, was two weeks ago paid a sum of K5 million for the project but has only covered a stretch of about 300 meters.

Bishop Chomba since directed Zambezi Drilling Limited to revise its work schedule with immediate effect and ensure the works are completed soon or face punitive action.

And Zambezi Drilling and Exploration site Engineer Jayachandra Goud has assured the permanent Secretary that the company will work extra hours in order to beat the deadline.

He says they have already requested for more excavator so that works could be quickened.
