Lifted ban on mealie meal exports will bridge export gap -ZACCI

The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) says the lifting of the ban on mealie meal export will help bridge the country’s net export gap.

ZACCI president Michael Nyirenda notes that Zambia is currently a net importer in terms of general production, a situation he says should change.

Mr. Nyirenda has therefore applauded government for allowing the export of mealie meal which he says will greatly encourage value addition to agricultural products.

He has also noted the need for government to allow the export of other by-products of maize such as stock feed.

Mr. Nyirenda has however, cautioned government to be cautious of what is in the strategic reserves so that the country does not end up in a food crisis in view of the dry spells being experienced in some parts of the country.
