HRC calls for peaceful campaigns

HRC Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya

The Human Rights Commission has advised the Zambia Police Service against being selective in the application of the Public Order Act in the forthcoming parliamentary and local government by-elections.

Commission Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says it is important that police officers conduct themselves in a professional manner, and allow all political parties to campaign freely.

Mr. Muleya has told Q-news that the commission expects that the forthcoming by-elections in Roan, Bahati and Kafue will be conducted in a peaceful, free and fair manner so that the will of the people prevails.

He has also noted the need for political parties to respect the right to freedom of assembly so that candidates are given an opportunity to sale their manifestoes without hindrance.

Mr. Muleya has also noted the need to protect Police officers who apply the Law equally from any form of victimization from the powers that be.
