Govt committed to address plight of street kids

Permanent secretary in the Office of the Vice President Stephen Mwansa has disclosed that it is making strides to reduce the number of street children in the country.

Mr. Mwansa has told q-news in Lusaka that the issue of street kids is an urgent matter that needs a permanent solution.

Mr. Mwansa has assured the public that government is doing everything possible to address the challenges being faced by children some of whom are forced to beg on the streets.

He has stated that children are supposed to get education for their future so that they should also support their children and not force them to go on the streets.

The permanent secretary in the office of the vice president adds that that government is working with Zambia National Service (ZNS) to accelerate the resettlement programmes that will help address issues living on the streets.

He says government is also planning to use the old national service camps to train street kids in various craft skills in order to ensure that there is a sustainable plan to keep the kids out of the streets.

Mr. Mwansa has stressed that government will provide capacity for the street kids to help them look after themselves in a correct way as opposed to begging in the streets.
