EL calls for revolutionary thinking to tackling inequality

President Edgar Lungu has called for revolutionary thinking in tacking gender inequality in Zambia.

President Lungu has observed that despite the progress made in formulating policies to promote gender equality, inequality and violation of women and girls’  rights has continued in the Country.

He notes that women in Zambia are still over burdened with poverty and continue to face challenges in accessing social and economic opportunities.

The President has further observed that gender inequality in the Country is being worsened by deep rooted traditions and cultural practices that promote male dominance.

He says there is therefore need to enhance efforts in gender equality and women empowerment, if the Country is to realize targets set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)and the 2030 vision.

The Head of State says government on its part is providing an enabling environment for quickening progress in attaining gender equality and women empowerment.

He has referred to the ratification of the UN convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women as one such enabler to gender equality.

President Lungu said this when he graced the 2019 international women day commemoration in Lusaka that was held under the theme: “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”.
