TFAZ concerned over Zambia’s failure to enforce the tobacco control law

Tobacco Free Association of Zambia (TFAZ) Executive Director Brenda Chitindi has expressed concern that Zambia has failed to enforce the tobacco control law.

Mrs. Chitindi says this has led to the number of smoking people increasing from 10 to 25 percent in men and from seven to 17 percent in females.

He has appealed to government to enact the statutory Instrument number 39 of 2008 on the ban on smoking in public, stating that it will help make people aware that they are not supposed to smoke in public places.

Mrs. Chitindi has told Q-News that the prohibition of smoking in public places has to be given special attention due to its hazardous nature to non smokers, who are forced to be passive smokers.

In 2008, the then Local Government and Housing Minister under the MMD Government Sylvia Masebo banned smoking in public places.
