Social, cultural, spiritual and economic fundamentals needed for gender equality

Ministry of Gender Permanent Secretary Dr Auxillia Ponga says government attaches great importance to women’s welfare, and welcomes initiatives aimed at facilitating gender equality and equity in all sectors through the engagement of various stakeholders.

Speaking at the Zambia National Women’s Lobby and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung International Women’s Day Dialogue, Dr Ponga says to attain gender equality, it must be a lived reality encompassing social,cultural,spiritual and economic fundamentals.

She says this year’s international Women’s Day whose theme is “think equal, build smart and innovative for change” is reminder to be mindful of the gender dynamics in all aspects of human endeavour.

Dr Ponga says it is imperative that women in positions of authority get involve in advocating for gender equality and equity if the country s to attain this coveted goal by 2030.

Speaking at the same event, Finnish Ambassador to Zambia Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury notes the need for more women in field of science,technology,engineering and mathematics.

She says women should be among those who create and develop technology so that their views and experiences are reflected in the solutions and applications that are used every day.

And Zambia National Women’s Lobby Board member Sylvia Nyambe has expressed concern that Zambia has continued to have a less than impressive record of gender equality with women occupying less than ten percent of decision making position in both the public and private sectors.
