15,000 Congo DR refugees have entered Zambia since 2017- UN

ABOUT fifteen thousand refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo have entered the country through Nchelenge district in Luapula province since 2017 the United Nations has disclosed.

Speaking in an interview with Q-news UN resident Coordinator, Janet Rogan says the country recorded high numbers of refugee inflows between August and December 2017 into Nchelenge district, but that the numbers have reduced over time.

She says the refugees that come in from Congo DR through Luapula are hosted at Mantampala refugee settlement which she says becomes a bit challenging for their stay during the rainy season as some of them use tents for shelter.

Mrs. Rogan says the UN in Zambia is working on an integrated development plan on how to host the refugee inflows in the country.

She has since pledged the United Nations’ commitment to help Zambia host and care for refugees.
