You can still sue govt, Mapani counsels students

Students at public universities have been advised to realize they still have the option of suing government if their quest to have the meal allowances reinstated fails.

Human rights lawyer Moono Mapani says the decision by government to unilaterally abolish meal allowances was an infringement of the students’ rights.

Mr. Mapani explains that the High Education Act, under which all public universities fall, prescribes meal allowances to students on bursary as a right.

He has told QTV News in an interview that if therefore students allow government to get away with its decision to abolish meal allowances, a bad precedent will be set in the Country.

Mr. Mapani says, as a human rights lawyer, he does not however; think a precedent of such nature where government unilaterally infringes upon people’s rights should be entertained.

He has appealed to President Edgar Lungu to rise above bold and ensure that government does the right thing with respect the abolished meal allowances for students.
