Kambwili granted bail in racial slur case

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Consultant Chishimba Kambwili has been granted a K3,000 cash bail with two working sureties each to pay K8,000 in case of default by the accused.

And Mr Kambwili has pleaded not guilty to the charge of  expression or showing hatred,ridicule or contempt for persons because of race,tribe or place of origin or colour contrary to section 70 of the penal code, cap 87 o the laws of Zambia.

The Roan Member of Parliament took plea before Lusaka Magistrate Humphrey Chulu.

Mr Kambwili’s lawyer Gilbert Phiri proceeded to apply for bail for his client who spent a night Police custody.

In applying for bail, Mr Phiri told the court that his client is a known figure in society and has been appearing in various courts for different cases where he has not breached bail conditions in the other cases.

The prosecution team did not object to the bail application, but requested that it be granted in Mr Kambwili’s own recognizance so as to enable him appear in court.

The matter has since been adjourned to 18th March for mention while trial has been set for April 8th and 9th.

And Mr Kambwili who spoke to journalists after being released complained over how long it took for him to be freed from Police custody.

Opposition leader who included UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema,ADD president Charles Milupi and NDC Vice President Joseph Akafumba were among those present at court to give solidarity to the Roan MP.
