EL asks ICC to probe Opposition Violence allegations

President Edgar Lungu has asked Amnesty International, the International Criminal Court and Human Rights Commission to probe the allegations made by the opposition Alliance.

Recently, the Opposition Alliance threatened to report President Edgar Lungu and seven others to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its quest for justice over the escalated political violence in Zambia arising from the recent by-elections.

Opposition Alliance Chairperson Charles Milupi accused President Lungu of orchestrating and funding the wave of political violence across the Country.

Speaking when he addressed the Media at State house, Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda says President Lungu has since directed Justice Minister Given Lubinda to invite the ICC to come to Zambia and conduct their own investigation.

Mr. Chanda says President Lungu has offered full cooperation with any investigation the international community may wish to carry out with regards to the human rights situation in the Country.

He says President Lungu has a long and proud history of working to protect and promote democracy in the region through his work with the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

And Mr. Chanda says he will commence civil and criminal proceedings against Opposition Alliance Chairperson Charles Milupi for allegedly lying that he was involved in initiating the political violence in the just ended Sesheke Parliamentary By-election.

He says his lawyers have seen civil and criminal proceedings in Mr. Milupi’s statement.
