LAZ endorses HRC’s report on Vespers’ death

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) says the report of the Human Rights Commission on the UNZA unrest of October 2018 in which a student vespers Shimuzhila died after suffocating should be taken seriously.

LAZ President Eddie Mwitwa says the investigation conducted by the commission has shed some light on what caused vespers’ death.

Mr. Mwitwa states that LAZ therefore hopes that the state will move with urgency in its investigation into Vespers’ death.

In an interview with Q-News, Mr. Mwitwa says LAZ finds it worrying that investigations into what caused vespers’ death have taken longer than expected.

He says LAZ does not know what else is left to investigate given the passage of time since her death.

Mr Mwitwa has also reiterated LAZ stands by its earlier pledge to render legal assistance to Vespers’ family.

Meanwhile Mr. Mwitwa has clarified that LAZ has no role in the purported use of the National Dialogue as a means to foster regime change in the country.

He says his association has not in fact been invited to be part of the dialogue process and has not yet taken a position on what role it can play.

Mr. Mwitwa explains that the meeting that was held at LAZ Secretariat by the opposition alliance and four other political parties was at the request of two LAZ members.
