ZANASU threatens to sue Luo for abolishing meal allowances

The Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU)has threaten to sue Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo for abolishing meal allowances for students at public universities.

ZANASU president Misheck Kakonde says his union believes that the decision by Professor Luo was unilateral and meant to punish students from poor families who solely depend on allowances.

Mr. Kakonde has told Q-News in a statement that ZANASU does not think government is broke that it can fail to pay meal allowances to students.

He says his union is aware that the extension of students’ loans to Palabama, Chalimbana, Mulungushi, Mukuba and Nkhwame Nkrumah Universities was necessitated by loan recoveries made last year.

Mr. Kakonde states that it is therefore false that the decision to abolish meal allowances as explained by Professor Luo was owing to the extension of the loans to other universities.

He has disclosed that ZANASU will in this case be engaging with affected students to chat the way forward regarding the abolished allowances.
