Zambia remains on Ebola high alert- Malama

Government says the country remains on high alert following the outbreak of Ebola in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Kennedy Malama says so far Zambia has not recorded any Ebola case.

In an interview by telephone, Dr. Malama has told Q-News that immediately the DRC reported the outbreak of the virus in August, government triggered its various chains of command.

Dr. Malama states that government has been strengthening health systems to respond to any potential spread of the Ebola virus.

He says government has over the years heightened levels of surveillance, preparedness, prevention and improved disease intelligence.

Dr. Malama has disclosed that government also trained about 250 health workers in specialized Ebola response and treatment, adding that this high level training is still ongoing.

He adds that government is also about to complete the construction of an Ebola isolation facility in Mwembeshi.
