At least 13 died during this year’s Christmas holiday

A least 13 people were killed in 12 separate fatal road traffic accidents that were recorded during this year’s Christmas holiday.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says this is from the total 125 accidents that were recorded from the 24th to the 26th of December this week.

Ms. Katongo says from the 125 recorded, 15 were serious accidents in which 22 persons were seriously injured.

She has told Q-News in a statement  that in other 26 slight serious accidents , 31 persons were slightly injured while 72 accidents only caused damages to involved motor vehicles.

Mrs Katongo says the 125 traffic accidents recorded during this year’s Christmas period was a decline of 109 accidents compared to the same period last year in which a total of 234 accidents were recorded.

She notes that fatalities have also decreased by 9 this year compared to last which had 22 deaths.

The Police spokesperson has attributed these decreases to increased presence of traffic police officers and Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) officers on major roads.

She says these joint operations have continued.
