Use of GRZ number plates on private vehicles irks minister

Works and Supply Minister

Minister of Works and Supply Mutotwe Kafwaya has described as fraud the continued use of GRZ number plates by some former government officials who were sold government vehicles.

Mr. Kafwaya has cited the case of former North-Western Province Minister Dawson Kafwaya who had the GRZ 882 CL number plates ripped off his Pajero vehicle which he said he bought from government but did not change the identity number into a private one.

The Minister who was accompanied by Controller of Government Transport Ernest Kunda when the Government Control Unit mounted patrols on Great East Road and Chongwe District on Saturday, wondered why people who are privileged to have bought government vehicles were shying away from completely changing the identity of the vehicles which are no longer Government property.

He has implored those who have bought GRZ vehicles to comply with the regulations governing the purchase of vehicles from either England or Japan.

Mr. Kafwaya has reiterated that the main objective of the random patrols is not for Government to raise revenue, but to make sure that government property was used to serve the Zambian people who are the tax payers.

The Minister has further warned those with in the habit of using Government vehicles for personal use such as Church, driving relatives and friends around desist.

Mr. Kafwaya was speaking during the Festive Season patrols on the misuse of Government vehicles which was conducted in Chongwe District yesterday by the Government Transport Control Unit (GTCU).
