UNPFA, World Vision accused of infringing SMAGs copyright

Public health specialist Beck Banda is demanding K15 million compensation from the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) for allegedly infringing upon the copyright of his innovation.

Dr. Banda claims to have initiated the Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) which the UNPFA allegedly now uses as its own initiative which is also being used by some other 40 organizations.

In an interview with QTV News, Dr. Banda, who is also Youth Cultural Promotion Association (YOCUPA) Executive Director, says he is also demanding K13 million from World Vision for the same infringement.

Dr. Banda says both the UNPFA and World Vision are in receipt of his compensation demand letters which were sent to the two organizations by his lawyers early this year.

He states that he has opted to demand compensation because he feels robbed of an innovation that has created impact on maternal health in Zambia.

Dr. Banda says the UNPFA and the World Vision have a responsibility to obey laws of copyright and must be made accountable if they break these laws.
