Ceremonies increasing child marriages – Chief Mphande

Chief Mphande of the Mambwe speaking people in Mbala District has observed that some traditional ceremonies are contributing to increasing cases of child marriage.

He says some traditional ceremonies initiate girls that have reached puberty but are not taught about how to keep themselves from falling pregnant.

Chief Mpande says the young girls once they reach puberty are being told that they are mature and ready for marriage.

He notes the need through the house of chiefs to choose mature women who should also sensitize girls on how to keep themselves so that they do not fall pregnant.
