HRC welcomes presidential directive to treat inmates with dignity

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has welcomed the directive by President  Edgar Lungu to the Zambia Correctional Services (ZCS) that it begins to treat inmates with dignity.

The HRC thinks that the guidance by President Lungu when he swore in ZCS Commissioner-General, Chisela Chileshe, to respect the rights and dignity of inmates, is extremely significant.

Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says this is particularly that it is coming from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces under  whom the ZCS falls.

Mr. Muleya has told Q-News in a statement that above all, the HRC welcomes President Lungu’s directive because it is consistent with the government’s human rights obligations.

He states that the Executive Commitment to promoting and protecting human rights could not have also come at a better time than during the countdown for the Human rights day that falls on 10th.
