Govt urged to stop arresting opponents unnecessarily

Government has been urged to adhere to the constitution and respect freedom of assembly, association and human rights.

Operation Young Vote (OYV) Executive Director Guess Nyirenda is encouraging government to refrain from interfering with the freedoms enshrined in the constitution such as freedom of assembly, association among others because it is denting the image of the country.

Mr. Nyirenda has recommended that the government must improve service delivery and be committed to finding a lasting solution to the ever declining social and economic conditions as opposed to arresting opponents they consider as their enemy.

Speaking to q-news, Mr. Nyirenda has stated that it is important that government should walk the talk, rather than merely pay lip service to respecting the rule of law.

He says it is worrying that now that the country has made strides in holding the pending dialogue, the government has concentrated on detaining and arresting opposition leaders, a situation he said will jeopardize the dialogue process.
