November inflation rate drops to 7.8%

The annual rate of inflation for the month of November 2018 as measured by the all items consumer price index decreased to 7.8 percent from 8.3 percent recorded in October, 2018.

Central Statistical Office Acting Director for Census and Statistics, Goodson Sinyenga has told a media briefing that the reduction is attributed to the purchase of motor vehicles and passenger transport by air from Lusaka to London through Dubai.

Meanwhile the annual rate of inflation for food and non alcoholic beverages increased to 8.4 percent in November 2018 from 8.3 percent in October 2018 representing a 0.1 percent increase.

Mr. Sinyenga says the increase is attributed to price changes of maize meal, live chicken, dried bream fish and dried kapenta.

He says the non-food inflation rate for November 2018 was recorded at 7.0 percent from 8.3 percent in October.

And Mr. Sinyenga has disclosed that in October, 2018, Zambia recorded the highest trade deficit this year which stood at K 2, 691.2 million representing 53. 7 percent from K1,750.7 million recorded in October.

Mr. Sinyenga says the increase which has been attributed to the purchase of consumer goods means that the country imported more than it exported in nominal terms.
