Wanchinga implores water utilities to win support of cooperating partners

Minister of Water Development and Environmental Protection, Dennis Wanchinga has implored water utilities to endeavor to win the support of cooperating partners in the water and sanitation sector.

Dr. Wanchinga says utilities should use resources from cooperating partners prudently so that they can continue to receive the much needed support for current and future programmes.

DENNIS-WANCHINGASpeaking at the first ever Sanitation summit in Lusaka with a focus on galvanizing political and multi sectoral will to addressing the challenges the sector faces, Dr. Wanchinga notes that that despite its importance, the sanitation sector has received very little attention.

Dr. Wanchinga says his ministry expects that after the summit, there will be more political will, building of strong relationships and financing to the sanitation sector.

He states that Zambia should draw inspiration from India which has made tremendous improvements in the sanitation sector despite having the highest human population and the poorest sanitation situation in the past.

And UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa , Leila Pakkala says now is the time to invest in Zambia’s sanitation sector both as a strategic means of lifting families out of poverty and as a practical measure in support of a generation of healthy Zambians.

Ms. Pakkala has since hailed the holding of the sanitation summit and has pledged UNICEF’s commitment to continued and expanded partnership with Zambia to enhance coverage of safe water supply, sanitation and hygiene services.

Government has set its vision towards the attainment of universal access to clean and safe water supply and adequate sanitation for all by 2030.
