CSO urged to capture actual statistics for the disabled during 2020 census

vlcsnap-2018-11-11-18h25m31s552The Disability Rights Watch has noted the need for the central statistics office to revise and streamline questions and data collection tools in the 2020 census so that they can be able to capture the actual data regards persons living with disabilities in the country.

Organisation National Coordination Bruce Chooma tells q news that there have been concerns from stakeholders that the previous census results to not bring out the actual statistics for persons living with disabilities sin the country.

Mr. Chooma notes that there are certain types of disabilities that are not captured such as psycho-socio disability and most children with disabilities are not captured.

Mr. Chooma has since appealed to ministry of national planning to engage the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) and experts in the sector to look at the data collection tools to revise them and ensure that they are able to capture all persons with disabilities come 2020.

He says going forward it is important for the 2020 census results to reflect the actual Zambian situation regards the number of persons living with disabilities.

He has also noted the need for persons with disabilities to be part and parcel of the enumerators as they may be in the best position to know how to use the tools and analyze information gotten from the people and translate it into the required data that will bring out the numbers of people living with disabilities.
