Govt hails Chief Madzimawe for assisting govt fight Child marriages

Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri has commended  Senior Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni people of Chipata’s efforts in reducing child marriages in his chiefdom.

During the commemoration of Independence Day President Lungu conferred the insignia of honour on Chimozi Jere who is Chief Madzimawe for his pioneering campaign for the eradication of child marriages in Zambia as well as fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV) and promoting community service.

And Ms. Phiri says the efforts by Chief Madzimawe in curbing child marriages in the area will further consolidate government’s efforts in ending the vice.

She has told QTV news that her government is determined to end all forms of child marriages in Zambia.

Ms. Phiri says government is working with religious leaders, traditional leaders, nongovernmental organizations in its efforts to end the practice of child marriage in the west African Country.

She has however implored other traditional leaders to emulate Chief Madzimawe and take a leading role in fighting early marriages in their chiefdoms.

Ms. Phiri has reaffirms government’s commitment to improving the lives and futures of adolescents by making sure they get an education.
