Mounting of speed trap cameras in selected roads abolished

vlcsnap-6004-07-05-04h50m26s668The mounting of hand held speed cameras by traffic police officers on parts of the roads that have been covered by speed cameras has been abolished with immediate effect.

Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo has also with immediate effect directed the police command to plan and execute regular rotations and transfers of officers from general duties to traffic and vice versa.

Mr. Kampyongo says he is concerned with the deterioration in levels of discipline in some officers of the Zambia police service in general and particularly in the traffic section.

He states that it has become evident that some traffic officers in the police service are abusing various essential tools of law enforcement regards traffic.

Mr. Kampyongo says this is why it has become necessary to re-assess the operations of traffic check points ,patrols and road blocks.

Mr. Kampyongo says the police command will now have to work closely with the Ministry of Finance to ensure for the full migration to electronic and direct payment systematic for fines and fees.

He has further directed that stiff penalties to be enforced on any unethical conduct by police officers and also for oversight integrity committees to be rolled out to all formations under the Zambia police service and other security institutions.

Meanwhile Mr. Kampyongo has announced that investigations into the recent riot that led to the death of a student at the University of Zambia have reached an advanced stage and the public will soon be communicated to in the findings while those found wanting will be dealt with according to the law.
