Freedom fighter mama Chibesakunda Kankasa has died.

Mama Kankasa died in South Africa where government had evacuated her for specialized treatment on 6th october,2018.

And chief government spokesperson Dora Siliya says government has received the passing of Mama Kankasa with great sadness.

Ms Siliya says late Mama Kankasa will be remembered as a pioneer for women in politics.

She notes that the late Mama Kankasa served as a chairperson for the women’s league and was also a member of the central committee during Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’s UNIP government.

The late mama Kankansa was born in Lubwa in Chinsali in 1936.

Meanwhile the Patriotic Front (pf)says it has received news of the of the passing of mama Chibesa Kankasa with extreme shock and profound sadness, particularly that her demise comes just a few days after the nation was celebrating its 54th independence day, a day whose origins and cause she significantly contributed to.

In a statement, PF Secretary General Davies Mwila says Mama Chibesa Kankasa was one of the significant firebrands of Zambia’s independence struggle.

Mr Mwila adds that as a trail blazer for women in leadership and decision making positions and a key feature of the nation’s development in its earlier years, her indelible legacy will forever be etched in the annals of the nation.

He says mama Kankasa was a matriarch whose wise counsel and encouraging demeanour shall be missed.

Mr Mwila adds mama Kankasa fought a good fight and ran a faithful race.

The PF Secretary General has since conveyed the ruling party’s condolences to the freedom fighter’s family.
