President Lungu visits kidney donor & recipient at UTH

President Edgar Lungu has visited the donor and recipient of the first ever kidney transplant surgery conducted at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

The President visited the kidney donor, Tinashe Kasweshi aged 25 a lawyer and the recipient Dr. Job Kasweshi aged 30 this afternoon.

President Lungu has expressed confidence that the successful first ever kidney transplant surgery will help cut down on monies government spends on sending people abroad for treatment.

He says sending of patients abroad for specialist treatment carries a number of costs as government also has to carter for the other family members to accompany the patient and carter for lodging and food.

President Lungu has since assured the ministry of health and the UTH of government’s to ensure that more of such operations are successfully conducted.

He notes that the successful surgery will help Zambia gain more because countries in the region will be sending patients to Zambia for specialist treatment.

President Lungu says his government will do everything to boost morale of the medical staff to work even harder.

He says it is his hope for all workers in the health sector and other sectors to be happy with their work.

He has since commended the Ministry of health and the team of surgeons who conducted the surgery for the successful operation of the kidney transfer.

Meanwhile minister of health Dr Chitalu Chilufya says his ministry is in the process of procuring new modern and specialized state of the art equipment for the intensive care unit at the UTH.

Dr. Chilufya has since thanked President Lungu for honoring the team of medical doctors involved in the separation of the Siamese twins saying this has given morale to the staff and medical personnel at UTH and the country at large.

And mother to the donor and recipient, Rabecca Kasweshi thanked President Lungu and the team of doctors led by Zambian surgeon Dr. Michael Mbambiko and an expert from India for the successful operation conducted on her son.
