Research fundamental pillar in attainment of UHC by 2021-Dr Chilufya

vlcsnap-2018-10-16-19h38m53s310Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya says government has pitched research as a fundamental pillar in its quest to attain the universal health coverage by 2021.

Dr. Chilufya has since directed that a clinical research center be established at the University Teaching Hospital to spearhead and strengthen research activities in the country.

And Dr Chilufya says the country is on course in attaining the fast track UNAIDS target 90-90-90 through various mechanisms being put in place.

The minister is also optimistic that Zambia will completely eliminate mother to child transmission of HIV and syphilis in pregnant women by 2021 through the ministry of health’s 2017-2021 strategic plan.

He says Zambia has made head ways in reducing mother to child transmission which currently stands at only 5 percent.

Dr Chilufya was speaking during the joint 8th Health Research Conference and the 12th Annual National HIV technical conference being held under the theme” sustaining the momentum towards HIV epidemic control”.

Speaking at the same event, United States Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote has noted the need for Zambia to have specialized medical personnel especially in the area of HIV and AIDS.

Mr. Foote notes that most HIV patients continue to die because of lack of access to medical specialists.

The 3 days joint conference has brought together heath personnel from all levels.
