The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has blamed the police command for the death of a fourth year student at the University of Zambia who suffocated after police tear gassed the great east road campus following a protest over unpaid meal allowances.
NDC Secretary General Mwenya Musenge says his party is disturbed that a life was lost owing to the unprofessional conduct by police officers.
Mr. Musenge is appealing to inspector general of police Kakoma Kanganja to discipline the officers involved.
He has told Q-news that the police should not have overly reacted in handling the fracas by the students.
Mr. Musenge has expressed fear that with this over zealousness from the police command, things might become worse as 2021 approaches.
And Mr. Musenge has also condemned the students for engaging in uncivilized acts by going to the streets every time they are agitated.
And Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Mwila has called on the police command to thoroughly investigate what exactly transpired and ensure that justice prevails.
Mr. Mwila has appealed to the students populace to exercise maximum restraint as government has heard their cry and will respond accordingly.
Meanwhile UPND secretary general Stephen Katuka says the loss of life could have been affected if the pf government took responsibility by paying the students their allowances on time.
Mr Katuka says it’s the UPND considered view that the pf government has failed to run public universities in the country.
He says UPND demands that the students are paid their allowances immediately.
