Zambia should Properly document First World War history-Simunchembu

vlcsnap-9581-07-13-14h08m50s876Military Historian Chipo Simunchembu has observed that Zambia has not done well in documenting the history of the First World War.

Mr. Simunchembu says all battle sites in the country need some kind of symbolization for people to easily identify them.

Speaking in Lusaka at the Poppy Appeal Day in remembrance of those who died in the first World War, Mr. Simunchembu says there is a high risk of the country losing the history of the world war largely due to poor documentation.

He has cited Malwilo in Mbala District which he says is little known simply because there is no importance attached to the role it played during the First World War

Mr Simunchembu has also suggested that the Zambian Curriculum be changed so that history of the First World War is told from the Zambian perspective.

Meanwhile Second Secretary at the German Embassy in Zambia Anne-Kathrin Lehrburger says there is need to educate more people on the history of the First World War

Ms. Lehrburger observes that few people understand the history of the first world war which she says is slowly being forgotten about.

She notes that many Africans think the First World War was only for the western world and have lost interest in its history.
