NGOCC launches civil & political rights booklet

The Nongovernmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has expressed concern that the 2016 amendments to the Republican Constitution have not been adequately popularized.

NGOCC acting Executive Director Chilufya Siwale says most Zambians, especially women, remain oblivious about civil and political rights provided in the amended Constitution.

Chilufya SiwaleMs. Siwale says a recently conducted baseline survey in Lusaka, Mazabuka and Gwembe Districts, has revealed that awareness levels on these rights have been low.

She says the NGOCC holds the position that given this low awareness levels, most Zambians, especially the women, are unable to claim their rights.

Ms. Siwale states that this is why the NGOCC has been advocating for the enactment of a people driven Republican constitution with an expanded Bill of Rights.

Speaking during the launch of a simplified booklet on civil and political rights as enshrined in the Zambian Constitution Amendment No. 2 of 2016, Ms. Siwale explained that the booklet is aimed at guiding citizens on their constitutional, civil and political rights and how they can claim them.
