Chimwemwe residents riots after Chinese shoots woman

Scores of Kitwe’s Chimwemwe township residents on Friday night raided some Chinese owned shops in the township after word went round that one of the shop owners had killed a Zambian national.

Police Public Relations Officer Esther Katongo has revealed that a 17 year female of Chimwemwe township, Kitwe was shot and wounded on her right ankle by Gao Em ming, 42, a Chinese national of Lubambe centre, parklands in Kitwe, using a 9mm glock pistol, serial number bfzn 775.

Ms. Katongo has confirmed the incident saying it occurred yesterday around 18:00hours at Yuchen investments limited, a Chinese shop at spur shopping centre in Chimfwembe.

Mrs. Katongo says this was after the Chinese national who was at the counter selling in the shop started playing with his pistol which in the process fired and the bullet wounded the Zambian worker who was standing within the shop.

She has named the victim as Roydah Mumba a shopkeeper at Yuchen investments limited at a Chinese shop and is admitted to Kitwe teaching hospital for observation.

Meanwhile the Chinese national who shot the worker is currently detained at riverside police station yet to be charged and a pistol with no rounds has been recovered.

Meanwhile Mrs. Katongo said after word went round that a Chinese national had killed a Zambian, residents of Chimwemwe township got infuriated and started throwing stones and looted the Chinese shop.

She says police quickly moved in and dispersed the mob and kept vigil.
