Court lets off Mumba in Abuse of Authority case

vlcsnap-1739-10-29-06h14m26s650The Lusaka Magistrate Court has let off opposition MMD faction leader Nevers Mumba in a matter he was facing two counts of Abuse of Authority of Office.

In this matter Dr. Mumba is alleged to have abused his office when he was  Zambia’s High Commissioner to Canada in awarding contracts to lay carpets and to repair the lighting system at his then official consulate residence in Ottawa.

But when the matter came up, Ndola High Court Registrar Joshua Banda, who sat as a magistrate in Lusaka, meted out an absolute discharge sentence after finding him guilty on both counts.

And speaking shortly after the Court’s ruling Dr. Banda thanked God that the case that has lasted six years has now been brought to a conclusion in this manner.

Dr. Mumba has told QTV News in an interview that he is particularly happy that he has received a total discharge, an outcome he says was already known by him and his supporters from the start.

He thinks that this case should have never seen the halls of the Court.

Dr. Mumba says he is however grateful to God for the lessons he has learnt and for the resilience and patience he has been taught to stay on course during the case.

He states that it was a painful experience not only to himself, his team but also to his family that stood with him throughout the six years.

Dr. Mumba says he will make a subsequent statement that will describe fully how he feels about this case and how he thinks cases of this nature should not take away tax payers’ money.

Meanwhile Dr. Mumba has encouraged President Edgar Lungu to be brutal with the truth when he opens Parliament on Friday this week.

He has advised President Lungu to realize that in times like this when there is a financial distress, the only answer is honest and the truth.
