Relying on aid to finance budget erodes sovereignty – Banda

Development activist Canisius Banda has observed the need for Zambia to stop relying on external support in financing its national budget.

Dr. Banda thinks that relying on aid from foreigners in financing the national budget is a source of erosion of sovereignty.

In an interview with QTV News Dr. Banda says he believes that Zambia has the potential to grow its income enough to finance its own national budget.

Dr. Banda who is also a university lecturer states that the focus of President Edgar Lungu’s speech as he opens Parliament this month should be therefore about how government will grow national income.

He says there is also need to ensure that there is prudence in the utilization of public funds.

Mr. Saunders thinks  that what President Lungu will say in Parliament will be a repeat of the same rhetoric that comes from such speeches each time Parliament is opening.

He has told QTV News in a separate interview that he will thus not bother to listen or watch what the President will say as de does not believe any of the pronouncements he will make will be fulfilled.

Mr. Saunders says as far as he is concerned it will not matter whether President Lungu makes impressive promises or not as the bottom line will remain that Zambians will still continue getting poor.

He is of the view that the people of Zambia cannot however continue living on promises that are always broken by those in government.
