Kasenengwa turnout won’t reach half of registered voters -AVAP

Voting is underway in the by-elections that are taking place in Kasenengwa constituency and in  five other wards.

The Kasenengwa Parliamentary Seat fell vacant following the death of  the then area Member of Parliament Victoria Kalima while vacancies in Kamalamba, Liyovu, Mabili, Nkenyauna and Shikombwe wards are as a result of resignations of councilors.

And the Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVA), which is monitoring the by-elections in Kasenengwa constituency, says the voter turnout for the by-election is still within its earlier projections.

Executive Director Richwell Mulwani has told Q-News that his organization is anticipating that voter turnout will not even reach half of the 49, 837 registered voters.

Mr. Mulwani says this is mainly because electorates that were supposed to vote for the opposition UPND candidate who pulled out from contesting the poll, will not turn up to vote.

He notes that the violence that was reported to have taken place a few days before the polling day in the area may also contribute to this low voter turnout.

Mr. Mulwani says AVAP has however observed that the electoral environment in Kasenengwa constituency is conducive for people to go and cast the vote.

He says his organization is yet to assess the electoral environment for the other five local government by-elections  that are taking place in Western and Northwestern Provinces.
