Local food value book launched

Shawa PSGovernment says it is determined to strengthen agricultural extension and seed system services, research and development especially in indigenous local foods.

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa says this will improve the dietary and nutritive value by targeting households most vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition and increasing consumer demand for diverse nutritious local foods.

He says the Ministry of Agriculture will continue to support and work with various stakeholders in designing programmes to increase the production and consumption of local foods that are adapted to local climatic conditions.

Mr. Shawa has since commended HIVOs and the consortium partners, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) for the initiative of stocking and documenting the various local foods of value in Zambia.

Speaking at the same event, Food Agriculture Organization Country Representative, Dr. George Okech says local foods are critical in dietary diversity and prevention of stunting, overweight and obesity, key issues that can hinder the achievements of Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Okech says some of the local and indigenous foods such as Black Jack and Amarathus are super foods, a power bank of micro-nutrients and much superior in nutrient quality than some exotic foods.
