Opposition MMD president Nevers Mumba has demanded the immediate closure of the Lusaka Central Correctional facility popularly known as Chimbokaila.
Dr. Mumba says having spent a day there, he can attest that the correctional facility is more of a torture gas chamber than a prison.
In an interview with QTV News, Dr. Mumba says from his experience, if one is not killed by diseases that are there at the correctional facility, they will be mentally affected by its subhuman conditions.
Dr. Mumba says it is inhumane to have a facility that was initially constructed to accommodate 240 inmates, to now have close to 1,300 prisoners.
He says as far as he is concerned, the Lusaka Central Correctional facility does not qualify to be a place where even animals would be kept.
Dr. Mumba has disclosed that to this effect he has written to the Commissioner of correctional facilities over what he observed while in custody at the facility.
He says he believes that justice means locking up a convict and withdrawing their freedom, but that their rights must never be withdrawn as the case is at the Lusaka Central Correctional facility.
