Political historian Bizeck Phiri says the only solution to ending violence and intolerance in Zambian politics lies in entrenching unity in the Country.

Professor Phiri says history confirms it that the One Zambia One Nation philosophy in the first republic after independence played a big role in unifying people of all ethnic backgrounds.

He believes that putting politics aside, even 50 years after independence Zambians are still united as evidenced by how they have continued to intermarry among various tribes and ethnic groups.

Professor Phiri notes that what divides Zambians however are messages from political leaders especially during election campaigns.

He suggests that in order to sustains unity during election periods political leaders should not target their campaign messages on particular ethnic groups but on promoting one Zambia.

Professor Phiri states that this is whether the elections are being held at ward, constituency or District level.

He has also advised the Zambia Police to be professional, non partisan and apply the law equally to all political parties during elections.

Professor Phiri was speaking to QTV News in an interview.
