First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda

First republican president Dr Kenneth Kaunda has been awarded the 2018 UNAIDS leadership award for his unwavering commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Speaking at the award ceremony in Lusaka, Dr. Kaunda dedicated the award to all Zambians whose loved ones have died from AIDS and those that are still battling with the virus.

The first president says he remains committed to the fight for an HIV/AIDS free generation, calling for more donor funds towards the fight.

Dr. Kaunda adds that the disease can only be eradicated if everyone is involved and no one is left behind.

And presenting the award to Dr Kaunda, President Edgar Lungu says the award rekindles the hope in the fight against the pandemic urging everyone to get on board in the fight.

The head of state emphasized that through working together the disease can be eradicated by 2030.

President Lungu says the country is proud of Dr. Kaunda’s achievements describing him as the Zambian hero.

Earlier, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe praised Dr. Kaunda’s courage in the fight against the pandemic.

Mr. Sidibe challenged the young people in Zambia and Africa as a whole, to take up the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The award ceremony was attended by other champions for an AIDS free generation Namibia’s former president Hifikepunye Pohamba and Uganda’s former vice president Wandira Kazibwe.
