The Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue (ZCID) has called on Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Zambia to investigate allegations that New Labour Party president Fresher Siwale was tortured whilst in Police custody.
ZCID Spokesperson Jackson Silavwe has also advised the police to carry out their duties in accordance with the law.
Mr. Silavwe says Zambia being a democratic society makes it mandatory that the principles of fair trial and the presumption of innocence be upheld by the police at all times.
He says the ZCID is concerned with the reported violations of Mr Siwale’s basic human rights by the Zambia Police Service such as; the right to be protected from torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and the right to appear before an independent and impartial court within reasonable time.
