Zambia still GMO free- Tonga

Lackson TongaThe National Biosafety Authority (NBA) a statutory body under the department of science and technology in the ministry of higher education has clarified that currently there is no activity or entity involving GMO grains in the country.

Authority Registrar Lackson Tonga says if at all the country has any GMO grains there is a possibility that it would be coming from the neighboring Malawi which is carrying out a confined field trial on genetically modified cotton.

Mr. Tonga however observed that while this would be the case Malawi has not yet commercialized its activity indicating that it is still not possible for the country to import GMOs without the knowledge of the relevant authorities.
