Hivos Southern Africa Regional Advocacy Officer For Sustainable Diets William Chilufya says his organization takes the recent directive by president lungu that there is need for Zambians to reduce dependence on mono cropping as a serious policy statement which can help addresses issues of climate change and food security.

Mr. Chilufya says HIVOS therefore, welcomes the statement by the president because it resonates with its call for the country to end mono cropping.

He has told q-news that the statement by the head of state to do away with mono-cropping is a timely call for the country to begin diversifying crops especially with the prevailing unpredictable weather patterns characterized by dry spells.

Mr. Chilufya observes that crop diversification can be a solution to non drought resistant crops such as maize which are in most cases highly affected dry spells.

He has cited sorghum and millet as some of the crops which must be considered when diversifying because of their ability to stand dry spells.

He said crop diversification must be encouraged because it is key to enhancing food security in the country.
